Oil on gesso board
The Al Hamadia souq ('market') dates back to the Ottoman era and was built along the axis of the Roman route to the Temple of Jupiter (the middle-ground of the painting). From ‘Feels like home’, an exhibition of paintings drawn from the personal photo archives of immigrants, refugees and other itinerants about leaving home and creating a new home. Noor (born in Damascus, Syria; currently living in Halifax, Canada): "I have been a refugee since I was born, but in Syria I wasn't feeling that it's not my country. So my home will let me feel that I am the daughter of the home, of the homeland – I am not a strange person or a foreigner. And I will feel, of course, safe. When I was in Syria I could go out and I would come home in the middle of the night."
Thomas' first solo show at the Everard Read Gallery, 36 views of Table Mountain, sold out before opening night. He has exhibited in Cape Town, Johannesburg, Toronto and Boston.
