Malay Quarters (2014), light jet C-print on archival paper (115 x 199 x 3 cm), Edition 1/5.

Delves into the rich Islamic history of the Cape and its unique heritage. The artwork explores how Islam began in the Cape, people brought as political exiles, slaves and as Indentured labourers from different colonial regions such as Malaysia, India etc.
The mural in the image captures some of the histories of this area, known today as Bokaap or The Malay Quarters. Many traditions and knowledge were passed down through generations, from teacher to student, parent to child.
This visual narrative mirrors not only the history of the Malay Quarter but also the upbringing of a traditional Muslim child in Cape Town.
